Hi, I’m June.
I’m a writer, journalist, and podcaster.
I spent 25 years at Slate magazine, during which time I held several jobs, including managing editor, foreign editor, culture critic, editor of Outward, Slate’s LGBTQ section, and senior managing producer of Slate podcasts. I left in 2022, but I still love the site and all its podcasts.
I publish a bi-weekly newsletter, in which I highlight great nuggets (mostly) of lesbian history that I encounter in the course of my research. Check out the archives.
I have a lot of interests and hobbies, including lesbian culture, dentistry, and stationery. Inverse magazine once published a piece about my media diet under the headline “June Thomas Is Idiosyncratic Tastes Embodied.”
What I read in 2023, 2024, and (so far in) 2025.
I run the world’s least successful YouTube channel.
